The question is more how bad is the phone addiction? Is phone addiction causing accidents while driving, trends that result in violence & marriages ending in divorce at astronomical rates? There are times where I'm on my phone because I'm searching for new ways to customize it because I want an updated look. Does that mean I'm addicted to it to where I'm not spending time with my family? Am I addicted to so much that I'm constantly losing jobs? There're more factors to phone use than just labeling it as addiction.

You had to write this response to a random article on the Internet. I think you might be addicted bud.

I read an article where someone used this boox e reader as a phone for a month. They said it was a great way to detox. All the apps they were used to were still there, but in black and white e-ink all the sudden the dopamine drops stopped coming from it.

Unfortunately this isn't a real solution yet. The boox does not have the ability to use mobile data. So you still need a smart phone or a hot spot for it to work, but it's existence is encouraging that something like this with a sim slot makes exist soon.

As you can see people need (or really want) things the smart phones offer. Maybe the answer isn't going dumb phone, but making the phone significantly less exciting to look at in general.

The item I'm speaking about is called the boox Palma. I'm unable to link atm

I would make the switch with just a few caveats. I would want GPS, youtube/youtube music, an email client, X, snapchat, and the big kicker would be Android Auto, even if just plugged in and not wireless.

Sooooooooooooooooooooo, a smartphone.

I tried changing to a Cat22 flip phone. Not the good 'ol days. I use my phone primarily for communication and trading. So yeah, need a smartie. But, no social media. The hard way is the best, self control and regulation.

Depression/anxiety and suicide rates spiked when social media use spiked. Look it up, easy google search. Smartphone addiction is 99% social media addiction. Get off social media and stop looking for worth, value and relationships there. You weren't made for that. Ditch the smartphone and when the fog fades in your head that you never realized was there until it disappeared you will be thankful you ditched it. It's worth whatever the compromises are. It's your life we are talking about.

...or just get off social media.

If one finds that they are so helpless to stop themselves from reinstalling social media apps every time they delete them, they could take some steps to make it so difficult to reinstall them that they aren't tempted anymore. For example, a VPN that blocks traffic to social media servers, and can't be deactivated without a complex, time-consuming many-factor authentication process. Or, in more extreme cases, an Android ROM that does not allow installing social media apps or browsing to social media sites.

I would consider making the switch, but with a few conditions. I’d need to have GPS, YouTube/YouTube Music, an email client, X, Snapchat, and the most important one for me would be Android Auto, even if it requires being plugged in rather than wireless.

When I was in China on a work trip, my smartphone suffered a severe case of dementia. Almost no social media worked as intended there, and internet connectivity was abysmal. On day 3 I felt extremely chill, and just let go. So yeah, dumb phones can help.
