Xiaomi Mi 5 could be announced October 19, official event invites go out

If you thought that Google's Nexus event was the last big announcement before the holiday shopping craze starts, you forgot about the world's fifth-largest phone maker, Xiaomi. It's been a while since the Mi 4 was announced, and the company might be gearing up for a successor, as it just posted the invitation for an October 19th event that you see on the right.

Granted, that doesn't mean that a Xiaomi Mi 5 will be unveiled there, but there is a high probability it will, though the sources say it will be a version with MediaTek's Helio X20 chipset, and the rumored variant with Snapdragon 820 won't appear before early 2016, when Qualcomm's chipset will enter mass production. It doesn't really matter, as the Helio X20 is no slouch in its own right, and is the first deca-core mobile chipset, sporting stellar performance, too.

As for what else would the Mi 5 offer, is anyone's guess, though the speculation is for a a metal chassis, 4 GB RAM, 16 MP rear camera, and Qualcomm's 3D Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. Given Xiaomi's track record with the line, the Mi 5 should also sport a screen diagonal in the 5"-5.3" range - a 5.2" Quad HD panel has been bandied about before - but let's not speculate further, as the eventual unveiling event is just a week from today. As for the price tag, the sources reiterate it would cost as much as its predecessor at launch - 1,999 Chinese Yuan ($316), which is a pretty svelte price for such specs, if it materializes.
