Several hours before Samsung’s banner event in New York, on the other side of the world in Goa, India, XOLO will be lifting the curtain off a successor to the X900, the company’s first “premium” handset, and the first smartphone with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor.
That CPU was from Intel’s Medfield series of processors. It is anticipated that this new device, whatever it may be called, will be packing new silicon from the new Clover Trail+ line of CPUs. The processors will be available in three calibrations, 2.0GHz (Z2580), 1.6GHz (Z2560) and 1.2GHz (Z2520). The Clover Trail+ chips support full HD and HSPA+, but LTE is not supported. For a device dedicated to the Indian market that is not a loss as LTE is only available on one major carrier.
On the graphics front, the new Intel CPUs each have two PowerVR SGX 544MP2 GPUs, so the graphic performance should be decent. The Clover Trail+ will also support up to a 2MP camera in the front and up to 16MP for the main camera. Intel claims that the CPU will support up to 15 frames per second when the camera is in burst mode.
As for the upcoming device itself, we do not know a whole lot, other than what the rendering in the small scale press invitation reveals, the “fastest smartphone ever with Intel inside,” a shiny finish edge with a 3.5mm headphone jack and a power/lock button. We will let you know what is behind the curtain while we gear up for the Samsung unveiling of the Galaxy S4.
