Everything seemed to go in favor for the Sony Xperia Z1/Z1S, well, that’s until you meticulously look at its display. For all the drool worthy specs it has to offer, like its mighty processor, monster camera, and waterproof nature, the display was by far the most underwhelming part of the entire smartphone. Indeed, its massive 5-inch 1080p Triluminos display is a sight to behold, but the closer we inspected it, we began to realize a few less than pleasing elements. One of them being the washed out nature of the display, and the other being its poor viewing angles.

With the introduction of its successor, the Xperia Z2, Sony has been able to capitalize on it by improving the display tremendously. Now armed with a larger 5.2-inch 1080p Triluminos display that’s based on IPS-LCD technology, the display has now transformed into something truly magnificent! Spending some time with it at Sony’s booth in the MWC 2014 showroom floor, we compared it to its sibling’s display – and boy were we amazed by the drastic difference!

Taking the detail part out of the equation, we can visually see the superiority of the Z2’s display. In general, the screen has a more vibrant look, which helps to cast some deep and robust color tones – whereas with the Z1/Z1S display, there’s a recognizable amount of dullness, to the point that the panel appears washed out at times. Furthermore, tilting the two smartphones at various angles, we can also see how the Z2’s display is able to maintain its clarity better. Conversely, the Z1/Z1S display loses its contrast and has more visible distortion.

Needless to say, the improved display is simply icing to an already wonderful smartphone. We’re surely excited to check out the handset in final form to pass our final judgment, but until then, you can check out the improved display in our video to see how they compare.
