BMW’s infotainment automation system, iDrive will now have full S-Voice and Siri support for the 2014 model year. Those vehicles will begin shipping later this year. Once a device is paired with the vehicle, voice commands can be executed by pressing a dedicated button on the steering wheel. iDrive also supports application access for iOS with a promise that Android app access will be enabled later this year.
The voice commands will have full access to include internet searches and location searches. BMW’s ConnectedDrive features a store which will also enable users to buy services without getting out of the car. While the car is stopped, the system will browse the web. The ConnectedDrive suite can provide real time traffic data, automatically call emergency services if it detects a crash and connect with other services as well.
“With the latest update to BMW iDrive, both Apple Siri and Samsung SVoice can be accessed through the vehicle’s voice command controls. With a paired device, pressing and holding the steering wheel voice command button will engage the device’s voice access. Pressing the steering wheel voice button without holding it will continue to access the vehicle’s voice command functions.”
