Microsoft Surface Pro 2 updated on the sly, now includes faster Intel chip
If you purchased the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 soon after its October 22nd launch, you might be upset to hear that the crew in Redmond has updated the tablet and has replaced the processor that originally powered the slate. Instead of the 1.6GHz Intel i5-4200U chip that was on the tablet when it first shipped, the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 now features a faster 1.9GHz i5-4300U CPU.
Based on recent Geekbench scores, it would appear that the change was made last month. A Surface Pro 2 owner, who had a problem with his slate following a firmware update, exchanged his tablet for a new one and noticed the change. Besides the faster speed, the newer chip also includes Intel Trusted Execution Technology, which offers enhanced software security.
The reason behind Microsoft's decision to replace the original processor on the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 is unknown, but the updated slates are just hitting stores right about now.
