Meet Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact: thinnest, lightest, brightest 8" waterproof slate
Sony did it again, as it just unveiled the world's thinnest, lightest and most-waterproof 8" tablet, under the name of Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Sony didn't have a representative in the small tablet niche so far, and the launch of this slate is remedying the situation, for a full mobile portfolio. The Z3 Tablet Compact is just 6.4mm thin, or as much as the 10" Xperia Z2 Tablet, making them both the thinnest slates in the world.

The Z3 Tablet Compact doesn't stop here, though, as it also introduces a very high for such a slim mobile device dust- and waterproof rating - IP58/68 certification - meaning that you can dive with it in up to 1.5 meters of water, and still be able to watch a full "Finding Nemo" down there, without the tablet skipping a beat. The new Sony slate sports an 8" 1920x1200 pixels Triluminos display with high brightness mode, and all of Sony's display mode bells and whistles, like the X-Reality engine that makes colors and contrast pop while watching media.

Powering all that jazz is a 2.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, which is the fastest edition of this Qualcomm family, aided by the generous 3 GB of RAM memory. The tablet has a 16 GB storage version only, but also a microSD slot for storage expansion at up to 128 GB more. On the back of the tablet Sony has placed one of its 8 MP Exmor RS sensors, while a 2 MP frontal cam ensures your video chats. Sony's Live on YouTube software lets you stream videos directly there for the world (or at least friends and relatives) to watch in real time.

Last, but not least, Sony has provided stereo speakers, and a new DSEE HX technology that "upscales" regular tunes to higher-resolution audio quality, but how exactly will that work in practice, remains to be seen. Keeping the lights on is a 4500 mAh battery that ensures up to 15 hours of HD video playback on a charge. In addition, you can use the tablet as a remote screen to connect to and control your games on PS4 with the so-called PS4 Remote Play for the Xperia Z3 series. Thus, when the TV is occupied, you can hook up the slate to the PS4 via Wi-Fi, and game with the DUALSHOCK4 controller, while the tablet is resting in front of you on the GCM10 Game Control Mount accessory.

Sony hasn't uttered a word on specific pricing for the different regions, but expect the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact to occupy the top spot of the world's thinnest and lightest 8" tablets in the fall, and no amount of water-jetting can topple it from there. What do you think about this latest Sony offering?
