Xiaomi Mi 5 appears on a list of handsets that support NFC
Back when Xiaomi was unveiling its current
Xiaomi Mi 4 flagship phone, the question came up about why the manufacturer decided not to offer NFC connectivity on the handset. CEO Lei Jun stated that the company discovered that only 1% of those toting the
Xiaomi Mi 3 and the
Xiaomi Mi 2A bothered to employ NFC on those devices.
It appears that Xiaomi is giving NFC another shot. A document released by China UnionPay lists 32 phones that will offer its "Cloud Lightening Pay" (translated) mobile payment service. The feature requires that those 32 handsets support NFC. Among the phones on the list is the
Xiaomi Mi 5. This would appear to be a pretty good sign that NFC is coming back to Xiaomi on its new flagship phone.
If China UnionPay sounds familiar, that is because we have written about the bank before.
It happens to be the lone financial institution in China to handle interbank payments, and its reluctance to sign off on Apple Pay is one of the big reasons why Apple cannot get its mobile payment service launched in the country.
Besides NFC support, we should see the Mi 5 come to market clad in metal, and
equipped with a fingerprint scanner embedded inside a home button.
Thanks for the tip!
