LG applies for "UltraWide Mobile+" trademark, 21:9 smartphone screen in-bound?

Judging by its latest patent application, LG might be onto something rather interesting. We know the company is gearing up to launch its Android 7.0-powered hero phone for the second-half-of-2016, the LG V20. In the meantime, LG is busy working on other technologies – and what could that be? How does a 21:9 ratio mobile display sound?

According to LG's patent application, this is going be its future secret (now not-so-secret) weapon for high-end smartphones. Larger than 16:9, a 21:9 aspect ratio offers extended width – hence the "UltraWide" trademark. It's the same aspect ratio used for cinema screens. Therefore, we expect this display to be fairly wider and longer than your typical 16:9 screen. It will be interesting to see how smartphone makers will experiment with form factors in order to accomodate it.

Not one to eschew experiments, LG has fiddled with screen ratios previously. Its peculiar LG VU series of handsets slash pocket tablets were notable with their 4:3 displays and unusually wide, love-them-or-hate-them bodies. Let's see what will come out of this!
