Instagram to introduce a translation button in the coming month

It is a feature that has been on many-a-wish-list for a while, and given its availability on its parent company, Facebook, it was probably just a matter of time. Today, Instagram announced that “in the coming month,” a translation button will be added where stories, and profile bios that are written in a language other than your own settings. The announcement does not indicate if individual comments within a post will also have that feature.

Instagram has enjoyed tremendous growth over the past couple years, recently announcing that it has over half-a-billion registered users. More impressive, is that 300 million of those accounts use Instagram every day.

Throughout that growth, the development team has been making slow and steady improvements to the application, only recently making some cosmetic changes, dropping the skeuomorphic logo design and adopting a more modern and simple logo.

Facebook, who acquired Instagram in 2012, no doubt played a significant role in bringing this translation feature to be added to the image sharing social network. Facebook has had this feature since 2011, and it is powered by Microsoft’s Bing. It is a safe bet that some of those underpinnings will also drive Instagram’s translation tools.
