CrucialTek unveils the tiniest fingerprint sensor, ready to go in your future phone

The side positioning in the power/lock key, like on the new Sony Xperia Z5 trio, is a great compromise, but there is something even better coming down the pipe, again from CrucialTek. We already told you that the biometric juggernaut scored a patent approval of its embedded fingerprint sensing technology, which can be installed in an area on the display panel itself, and that will probably appear in handsets at some point, but now the CrucialTek team has a simpler solution.
The company unveiled new fingerprint sensing Muon algorithms that allows a minimum recognition surface area of just, wait for it... 8 mm2. Of course, with all packaging paraphernalia, the sensors will end up at about 18.72 mm2 (5.2 x 3.6 mm) surface area, but just compare that to the current units that are on the back of the Nexus 5X or 6P, which are 64 mm2 (8.0 x 8.0 mm) in size.
These compact finger scanners can now be slapped anywhere - on thinner, more elegant buttons, and smaller home keys that will eventually allow for better screen-to-body ratios of phones with fingerprint sensors. Not only that, but CrucialTek increased the recognition speed and security of its new sensors with the Muon algorithm, making their invention a very compelling package, and has supplied it to phone makers for review, so we might see it in handsets as soon as next year.
