Great Phone

Today Anonymous

8 out of 10

I'm not an advanced user, but I got the Touch Pro because it looked like it would have everything I wanted and eliminate the things I hated about my Blackberry Pearl (typing, trackball, crappy browser).  I tried the Storm, and couldn't stand typing on it - I really wanted a full real QWERTY keyboard, and this one is great.  I have NO problems typing on it, it's accurate, has a good feel, and isn't flimsy or "cheap" feeling at all.  The phone responds well in changing its orientation - slight lag, but nothing that would stop me from using it.

It came with the Touch Flo turned off, and it took me a couple of days til I finally opened the pdf manual and learned how to turn it on.  I'm not an advanced tech user, so this phone and the windows OS have a definite learning curve for me, but so far I like it.  Reading the manual has helped a lot too - many of the things I couldn't figure out on my own, or shortcuts and tips, have made me like the phone a lot better.  I haven't decided if I'm going to keep touch flo or go back to the windows shell...

I also have not yet figured out youtube / video streaming (I'll probably end up calling verizon tech because I get an error if I try to watch a video), but the browser is very quick using either Opera or just plain IE.  Compared to the Pearl, it's night and day, 100% better.

The touch screen works well with or without the stylus, and for someone who's never had a touchscreen phone before, I'm getting used to it after only a couple of days.  I'm still glad for the 30 day return policy just in case, but I don't think I'll be using it.  Little things, for me, like figuring out how to get the keypad back during a call (to check messages, etc) could be easier / more obvious, but not impossible to find.

Overall, I'm pleased so far, and it's an improvement in all areas I wanted/needed.  Can't express how much I hated the Pearl's crappy non-qwerty keyboard (that the salesman swore I'd get used to and love) and buggy slow web browsing.  I don't think I'd be at all happy with a touch-screen phone that didn't have a real qwerty keyboard too, so the Omnia wasn't a real option for me.

As far as being a phone, the sound is good.  Loud enough, clear, easy to adjust the volume.  For texting, it's also easy and accurate.  I was able to customize the little things (ringtones, alerts, wallpaper) very easily.  It synced with Outlook on the first try, no issues at all.  I would like a 2nd cord, as the sync cord and the power cord are one and the same.  Battery life is... not great... as I expected.  Hopefully I'll find an extended life battery soon...  Oh - and the games (bubblets - my favorite) and teeter are great - my kids keep stealing it to play teeter.

QWERTY keyboard
Good web browser
Good sound quality
Takes some learning / getting used to, for a non-techie user
Battery life isn't great, but that's no big surprise

Nice Upgrade to the Mogul

28 Nov 2008 christopher.beatty@comcast.net

9.3 out of 10

Wow!  Everyone is "dogging" this phone so much it's hard to find a decent review.  I've been trying to compare it to the Omnia and all I can find are folks with the Omnia that love theirs and folks with the HTC TouchPro (TP) that are angry with Verizon.

I guess I'll offer my opinion (now that I've read nearly everyone elses).  I think it's a step above the Mogul and the Vogue.  I concede the point that it's "not as far as Verizon could have gone,..." but it's still a great device in its own right.

Call quality and reception seem to be on par with the Mogul (6800),... which is better than the Vogue (6900).  I bought the vogue and can rarely use it - due to the number of dropped calls I receive in my home.  TP has had a few - but no more than the Mogul ever gave me.  Out and about town - never a problem with dropped calls,... it's always at home and in the "inner rooms." Oh, there is an anomaly that is bothersome.  It appears there's a glitch with incoming calls, yeah, seriously,... So if you get the Advanced Configuration Tool (recommended below) you will find it possible to turn the "phone skin" off.  If you do this, it will ring on the second ring,... otherwise,... it will already have been ringing 3 - 4 times before you hear it on your end,... (yeah this is more than just Slot Cycle,... so don't hit me up on that - I know my phones) ;)

Sound is good and the screen is absolutely awesome!! I'm not big on the math of memory - so I don't want to get into a huge protracted debate.  But Verizon's version does have 64MB dedicated to the graphics that others don't,... I'm just saying - it looks beautiful and once you get the YouTube apps installed it streams a beautiful image.

Battery life is "okay,..." but if you're like me and you are a long time SmartPhone user, you probably like to have two batteries anyway.  As soon as the accessories get populated for this, I will buy a cradle and battery to swap out as one looses charge.  I've heard people ask for a bigger screen - but honestly, at this resolution it would eat up a lot of juice to have a screen that pretty!

"Lag???" Yes, it's there if you are using TF3D - without it - no way.  Perform the tweaks (that's the beauty of the TP - there are tons out there) and it will perform better right away.  Interesting observation is that with TF3D the lag goes away after a while.  I don't know if it's loading up cache or what the issue is, but I've found that it does NOT perform stellar after a reboot.  But if you give it 10 minutes and it's downright snappy. Google up a copy of the Advanced Configuration Tool TouchPro and you can find both the recommended tweaks as well as the graphical user interface to changing them.

Keyboard is also nice to have especially when you are trying to get a complex URL entered,... But I'd probably have gotten the Diamond if Verizon had picked it up simultaneously,... so let me bottom line it for you:  HTC TP has probably the most advanced user community of support (programs, interface tweaks, adjustments, hackers, enabling GPS, cooking up ROM's, providing kitchens) of any of the smartphones.  Too much work has already been invested in these phones and this one is just on the cusp of being fully unlocked (heck, in the time it took me to type this - there's probably already been a dozen or so new discoveries).

So, back to the "comparison,..." well, since I don't have the Omnia I can't be contemptious.  All I can say is what draws me to this phone over that phone.  I think the Omnia is the perfect phone for the "out of the box" never gonna flash a phone kind of user.  So, if you don't fiddle, tinker, optimize, dump it all off and start all over again on a monthly basis,... the Omnia is probably an awesome phone for you!!  I, on the other hand, have to drive my family and friends crazy by having something "new and ludicraous" happening on my phone.  I'm alway's showing off some new visual effect or feature.  That's the main reason I gravitate towards the TP. Keyboard helps, it does have more RAM and ROM than the Omnia, and it's got all those great Chefs cooking up new ROM's.

Keyboard
VGA Resolution - Screen is Beautiful
Automatically dims/brightens - Sensor for outdoor lighting is nice
TouchFlo3D Interface (is customizable if you're up to it)
Solid Device
Lots of developers / Support Community
Standard Cables / Adapters
Voice Dialing (hold the send key)
Less ROM than the competitors (although - it is configured diff 64MB to graphics)
Not for the technically challenged
Lots of tweaks to be performed to make it smmmmooooooth
